I set up a packet station tonight and would like to see if it works. Is
there a frequency in the Detroit area that I can monitor - a DX cluster
perhaps? I've been scanning 2m for an hour and haven't heard anything that
sounds digitesque. Then again, it is 2:30 AM local time!

the K8NA dx cluster is generally pretty active.
freq 145.95

You should hear a few bbs's on scan between
144.91-145.09. 2M Packet activity quite low
here compared to a few years ago, though.

Brian,
Connect via 2m packet to ancbbs (145.01) or (147.96). That is the main
packet hub for alaska and is there in Anchorage.
Might look for phone number of Doug Dickinson (kl7ikx) also.
Under web, look at: http://kl7aa.akconnect.com/ or
http://www.qsl.net/kl7air/

Good luck and 73!

All I do is run my TS-940S in SSB mode and just crank down on the slope tune
knobs. The resultant selectivity is more than enough and I let the software
do the rest. If there is too much tightening, I can kill off the signal with
no problem. Weak signal contacts have been excellent with the radio in SSB
mode.

They don't have to, unless you need to sample at different rates
on the two channels. You shouldn't need to do that, so it isn't a
problem. The cards do need to be full duplex, however. Most
are, some aren't.

The more pressing problem is having enough processor HP
to handle multiple simultaneous streams of DSP. An old
486 or early Pentium isn't going to cut it with 4 stereo sound
cards to service.
