When "packet radio" is what you want, at the speeds that are antiquated
but in wide use all over the world, you should not buy any box that has its
own microprocessor and presents itself as a TNC.
That is outdated technology, invented in the days when there were many
different kinds of computers in use in ham shacks, most of them
underpowered to run the AX.25 protocol. A unit like a TNC could present
them with a simple interface to the AX.25 protocol, adequate when the
average user used his computer only as a terminal (and it was sweating
to keep up with 9600 bps RS232 and writing the incoming characters to the
screen at the same time).
Today, 15 years later, the computer world has moved on and it is no longer
necessary to have a Z-80 in a standalone box to assist the main computer to
run AX.25. It is only a burden, as the link between the external box and
the main system presents extra problems that were not there in the first
place. This thread is about an excellent example of such problems.
So, when you want to run packet, choose between the following solutions:
- software (DSP) modem using a soundcard.
- external modem connected to a COM port that bit-bangs HDLC data
(the Baycom solution).
- external modem connected in a slightly more clever way, but still a
dumb modem without any AX.25 protocol knowledge. e.g. "YAM".
- SCC card driving dumb external modem(s).
Don't buy a TNC. Of any make.
