It's a problem that occurs when the TNC is used in terminal mode with a
buffered UART, at a terminal baud rate greater than 2400.

When the TNC's input buffer is full, and it lowers CTS, the PC is still
likely to send a few characters. That is perfectly normal behaviour.
With Kantronics TNCs, this results in characters being dropped. The
problem is extremely easy to reproduce.

As a final comment, because this thread is obviously going nowhere:-

1. The problem definitely occurs - hundreds of users can't all we wrong,
and it can be very easily demonstrated.

2. I know of no other TNCs that have the same problem - every other
manufacturer seems to have managed to correctly implement hardware
handshaking for many years.

3. Saying use Kantronics host mode, and quoting chunks of the host mode
spec, is not the answer. Certainly in terms of PMS software, the host
mode programs are usually inferior in terms of the facilities they
offer, and more expensive, than some of the programs designed for use
with a wide range of TNCs.

I am looking for a dead KPC-3 to use the case for a project. If you
have one that you would like to part with let me know.

That is not a problem. The number of years since 1900 now is 100.

The problem is that so many programmers assumed that the had to put
that variable after a fixed string of "19", e.g. in constructions like:

printf("the year is 19%02d", tm->tm_year);

This is WRONG. it will print 19100 as the year. it should read:

printf("the year is %04d", tm->tm_year + 1900);

when one is only interested in two digits of the year, the proper
form is:

printf("the year is %02d", tm->tm_year % 100);

This will nicely print 00 as the year. Forgetting the % 100 will yield
100 as the year, with resulting field-width problems.

So, there is no priblem with the tm structure, there is a problem with
many programmers' incorrect interpretation of its contents. Likewise,
first releases of programs written by naive programmers often have the
month number off-by-one in the output. When it is April, the program
says it is month number 3. But that bug is often quickly fixed, as it
is noticed by so many users.
Unfortunately many programmers did not take that as a hint to read
the documentation more carefully before proceeding...
