What's needed is more intelligence in the TNC. With a bit more code in a,
few places the number of possible APRS data strings could be cut
significantly,
ideally to just one format. As it is now, the TNC has no real understanding
of $GPGGA etc, just remembers them and beacons them. The decoding
software is expected to understand normal APRS strings, NMEA-0183, etc, etc.

IMHO APRS badly misuses the destination address also. It is being
used to give software version numbers, even. I refuse to use any
destination other than "APRS", and I don't use WinAPRS either.

Subject: DSP-232 Upgrade

Has anyone here purchased the DSP-232 upgrade from Timewave? According to
their web site, the upgrade contains version 7.2 firmware, along with PC
Pakratt 3.1 or PK'Term'99, depending on whether you want to spend $50 or $70.

My DSP-232 has v1.0 L31 roms, which I *believe* was AEA's last release. The
jump from v1.0 to v7.2 seems like a rather large change if all that was fixed
was the Pactor turnover problem.

Any comments on the new roms (or the accompanying terminal software) would be
appreciated.
