Excellent advice. I was not aware that you could usually turn these off.
In W98, I can see an advanced option called "Microphone Gain Control"
(on or off) which might be it.

The latter. I've never tried to work with them.

It blew the sound chip on my card when I accidently did this.

Apple avoided this problem by using a modified (longer) plug for the
microphone. The DC power is at the tip, but since the jack is designed
for a longer plug, a normal plug won't reach it. The center ring is
longer, and connects to both left and right channels, for blended mono
recording. Yet a stereo plug could also be used, for true stereo
recording.

Do the sound card mike preamplifiers distort the signal even if you
don't overdrive them or are you saying it's best not to use them
because they are easy to overdrive? If the sound card design is that
poor, doesn't it call into question the remainder of it's audio
chain? On one setup I have a very low audio output and use the mike
input. I've not noticed any problem but of course that's a sample of
only one sound card and others could perform quite differently.

Subject: CW Over the Net?
Is there software that creates a "Virtual CW Transceiver" that
would let folks send & receive CW over the net? Sort of like
Instant Messaging but using their space bars as straight keys
or other keys as a paddle?
This could be a great way of advancing interest in CW and giving
people actual practice, real thrills from actual contacts, and
foster more interest using the medium of the day.
