This seems kind of bogus. If I buy a car from a FORD dealership and use it for
a
couple of years, I can turn around and sell it used to another person. Yet if
I
buy a mufti MB program from Hamalot Inc. that won't fit on 3.5 in. floppies,
isn't sold on CD Rom and is distributed over the web. Then I can't sell it to
someone second hand later on? I don't get this licensing practice. I can
certainly buy MicroSoft Office on CD and later sell it legally to a second
party.

I understand how it would be illegal if the original owner continued to use
the
software after selling the key to the second party. I would think that the
software distributor would have to be notified of the transfer of ownership to
the second party so they may be eligible for upgrades. But all of this should
be
do-able. And the operating code can only be sourced via the web as it doesn't
fit
on floppies and isn't available on CD.

Some of these ham programs are rather expensive and they become obsolete in
only
a couple of years. Saving a little money isn't immoral or unethical.

Oh well - Jeff

Subject: Used HAM Software?

Hi Jeff,

Try Logger. It is great! As it names suggests it has a logging program,
but it also has a great terminal program and PSK31 support (all you need is
a sound card as a modem for PSK31)

Best of all -- Logger is freeware. GOTO www.itis.net

There is some good commercial software out there like XPWARE and Pacterm.
But for HF modes with the KAM (or any other TNC), I like using Logger the
best! Unfortunately Logger will not let you use one of the KAM's HF modes
and VHF packet at the same time.

If you buy a commercial product check to see if it supports KANTRONICS host
mode. The host mode will let you use one of the HF modes and packet at the
same time (e.g. You can run RTTY and have another window open monitoring a
DX Cluster). I believe that XPWARE and PacTerm both use the KANTRONICS host
mode.

There are trial or demo versions of both XPWARE and PacTerm available off
the web. Both appear to be excellent products.

But if you want to save some money you may want to try Logger first.

To answer your "Real" question about buying and selling software -- It is
more correct to use the term licensing. It is rare that one buys
software -- one obtains a licence for the right to use it.

It is rare but some software licence agreements let you even sublicence the
software to someone else (and you can still use the software yourself). As
you can see this is not a very profitable approach but some licence
agreements are poorly worded and let you do that.

Look at the licence agreement. You probably will not be able to grant sub
licences but you may be able to transfer the licence. If you can transfer
your licence to use the software to someone else, typically you have to
destroy all your copies of the software (on any disk on any computer etc),
and may even have to notify the company from which you bought the software
of the transfer of the licence.

SOME licence agreements WILL NOT even let you transfer the software licence
to someone else -- You are stuck with the software. The person who wants
the software will have to obtain a new licence from the company who
developed it

APRS is about the only thing growing on 2m packet. The BBS is pretty
much done, and TheNet nodes are coming down daily, so only local
activity will be found, unless there is an internet gateway.

>. What tnc is the best to start with

The best TNC is a Pentium computer. Get a sound card and Linux, or
even Windows, and do packet via the sound card.
