I read someplace that you can improve the thermal properties of epoxy if you
mix some sand into it.

Subject: AEA PK-88 Help Needed!
Hi everyone,
I have an AEA PK-88.
About 4 years ago, it stopped responding. Power was applied and nothing
would happen but the power light coming on.
I replaced the Main firmware chip. AEA had sent me an update to the old
one and I put the old one back in. It worked fine for another 3 years.
Recently it's stopped responding again, and neither chip works. I'm
wondering if they are somehow getting damaged by static.
In any case, does anyone know where I can get a replacement firmware for
the PK-88? New or old, I just want to see it working again-
THanks,
Joe

I've had a PK-900 since they first came out, having up-graded from a
PK-232, as I particularly wanted the true dual-port feature.
With the demise of support from AEA, is anyone aware of any third
parties who have produced updated ROMs for this model? Anyone done
any interesting mods, or know of Internet sites that describe any?

I use Airmail on the Winlink system and await an answer to the PTC-IIe
use on Winlink. I currently use a KAM+ and am thinking of upgrading.

APRS PROTOCOL SPECIFICATION
===========================
TAPR announces release of the second public draft of
the APRS Protocol Specification.
----------------------------------------------------
It's finally here! The APRS Working Group has completed the second
public draft of the APRS Protocol Specification.
This document covers the core functionality of APRS Protocol Version
1.0 as it works today. This is the base level specification that all
implementations should comply with, and it was unanimously adopted by
the Working Group members, who include the authors of APRS-DOS,
WinAPRS, MacAPRS, X-APRS, PocketAPRS, APRS+SA, javAPRS, and APRServe,
and the developers of the Mic-E and Pic-E products.
The Specification forms the basis for future Working Group projects,
including APRS test suites and the APRS Certification Program. The
WG also hopes to use this document as the basis for further
specifications, including IGate and APRS digipeater operation.
Over the last 8 weeks the specification has grown from 18 pages to 93.
It now includes packet format diagrams, the APRS symbol tables, full
details of the Mic-E encoded format, the compressed lat/long position
format, plus weather report and telemetry formats. Above all, the
specification contains many examples of how APRS data is formatted to
make it easier to understand.
The APRS Protocol Specification is now available on the APRS Working
Group web page at: http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/Faprswg.html.
It is available in PDF format, both zipped and unzipped. The zip file
