You shouldn't need that much power. When we fly high altitude balloons
(up to 100,000 feet), we typically use no more than 100 mW for the beacon. 
That can be heard more than 100 miles when at altitude. Standard DF 
techniques should allow you to recover a payload emitting less than 100 mW. 
You'll know roughly where it came down since you'll be tracking it on the way 
down. When you drive to that area, you should be able to hear the beacon on 
the ground.

You want to use the minimum power possible so that the batteries will
keep the beacon operating long enough to recover the payload. That can 
take several hours (sometimes days if it comes down in an inaccessable
location), and a 5 watt transmitter would drain any reasonable size battery 
much quicker than that. Besides, power and weight are at an extreme
premium in this sort of situation. You really can't afford to carry enough
battery capacity to operate at higher power.

Pot it in epoxy. Note that potting also implies use of rather low power
because heat won't be able to efficiently escape from a potted circuit
and higher power transmitters get hot. Another tip, it gets bloody cold
at high altitudes, insulate the frequency determining components against
this, or the transmitter may quit, or drift very far off frequency. We use
styrofoam insulation for balloon payloads. Of course they stay up there
longer than your payload will, but the ride down on the parachute will
still take several minutes, and that's long enough to cause serious
temperature effects to an uninsulated payload.

Hi Roger,

I went to your web site and download WinPack 6.40 and the upgrade to 6.42.
I am very impressed with Winpack.  You must have spent a lot of time
developing it.  The docs are also excellent.  A first class product!

After reading the docs, I noticed that Winpack in TF2.7b mode does not use
any handshaking (also ignores number of stop bits etc).  Why is this??  I
always thought WA8DED host mode could use and normally did use handshaking.
Am I wrong??
