- NASA has demonstrated this quite clearly.

Maybe the "real experts" at Never A Straight Answer might be some assistance,
but as the poster responded, his use of GPS did not involve any of the issues
you so condescendingly assumed it did - so at least they still have a CHANCE
at being some assistance to him. Got you beat all to hell. I figure one
asshole response deserves another - Have a nice day, Herb !

The world-wide list is in your email.

Hi Trish,

You will find that the majority of the Winlink stations have upgraded their
controllers to SCS PTC II. Even on Pactor 1, the SCS controllers are much
better.

Here I have a KAM and SCS PTC II. Even on pactor 1, the SCS PTC II is
vastly superior. Unfortunately, many US TNC's such as the KAM and PK232MBX
only use software ARQ which significantly decreases the performance on
Pactor 1. Many hams formed the mistaken belief that Pactor 1 really wasn't
a great mode. This belief is wrong. Pactor 1 is a great mode but only if
you need the right hardware.

The SCS controllers always used hardware ARQ - a big difference!

On pactor II, you will see a fantastic improvement in throughput especially
on poor links. I can use Pactor II when all the other modes fail!

You can configure the PTC II to refuse AMTOR or Pactor 1 connects or both.
You will find that some WINLINKS will only let you connect with them on
PACTOR II. Personally I don't like this practice. There are many hams out
there that can't afford a SCS PTC II or SCS PTC IIe controller.

I have experimented with WINLINK using my SCS PTC II. I had no problems
getting WINLINK up and running with my PTC II.

Yes the PTC II has PSK31 built into the firmware. I have compared the
performance of the PTC II on PSK31 with Logger program (which uses a
soundcard). In fact, in two separate windows I can receive the same PSK31
signal -- one window for the PTC II and one window for the Logger program.
Sometimes, the PTC II is better -- sometimes Logger is better. In my view,
there is little difference between the two. If you just want PSK31, Logger
is a much cheaper alternative.

I also use PTC II for SSTV with JVcomm32 program. It works great! (I have
also used EZSSTV and JVFAX and MSCAN programs -- all work great with PTC
II).

As far as a good terminal program for the SCS PTC II is concerned, XPWIN or
Logger are great choices. XPwin is expensive but easy to use. If you can
connect your KAM to one comm port and the PTC II to another comm port on
your computer, you can use XPWIN to control both. (there are other
terminal programs at the SCS web site -- www.scs-ptc.com)

Logger is my first choice! Logger is freeware and once configured is, in my
view, the easiest terminal program to use! You have to program buttons
grouped at the bottom of the terminal screen which you click on to perform
functions (like change modes or send a brag file). The buttons have user
defined labels (so you don't have to remember that F12 does X etc). You can
consider the buttons macros.

Also with Logger you can use the sound card of your computer for PSK31 (but
since the PTC II has PSK31 you probably won't use this feature). As its
name implies, Logger also has a logging program but its not as good as
everything else in Logger.

There are lots of places where you can find Logger. One good place is
http://www.chroniclenetworks.com/~dwm/Logger.htm. Another place is
www.itis.net/golist. FYI - The current version is 6.11.

With the PTC II in its terminal mode, you can access all the HF modes of the
PTC II (AMTOR, RTTY, PACTOR etc) and if you have the optional packet modems,
you can access the packet mode.

However, if you want to easily use the optional packet modems with the PTC
II, you will need a good WA8DED compatible host mode program. Lots of hams
seem to use Graphic Packet (ver 1.63) for DOS. (another freeware program).
You should be able to use other WA8DED hostmode compatible programs such as
WinGT or Winpack. (I am experimenting with these now).

In fact, the PTC II has an advanced WA8DED hostmode, it is rarely used. The
developers of PacTerm for the KAM, KPC3 etc are now developing PTC Term for
the SCS PTC II which will use the advanced WA8DED host mode of the PTC II.
But PTC Term is not yet on the market (Perhaps in the new year ??)

But note, the so called advanced host mode for the PTC II only supports
Packet and Pactor connects. So you can have a Pactor and Packet qso (or
multiple packet qsos) at the same time. But it does not support any of the
other HF modes. So You cannot have a RTTY and Packet QSO at the same time.
To bad, especially if you want to monitor a DX Cluster on Packet during a
RTTY contest.

Since PTC Term is expected to support the Advanced WA8DED hostmode, you
should be able to make Pactor and packet qsos at the same time. (e.g
monitor DX cluster on packet, connect to your BBS on packet and have a
PACTOR QSO at the same time). PTC Term is also expected to support the PTC
II's terminal mode for the other HF modes such as RTTY, PSK31 etc.

Despite the shortcomings of the PTC II's hostmode, the PTC II Is a great
modem. Its performance on Pactor 1, Pactor II, AMTOR and RTTY is
significantly better than my KAM.
