In our country they learn about this before they can do the tech exams
required to get a license... the authorities think it is a good idea for
the amatures (sic) to have at least some basic knowledge about electronics
before they are allowed to construct their own radio station.
How is the situation in the USA?

The list is designed for those of us interested & using wavelan and
compatible technologies for wireless networking.

Yea, damn Kenwood, Yaesu, etc. All they want is money. They don't
care about Ham radio.
Forget that they provide the majority of radios that Hams use. Forget
that when Hams say that they "roll their own" they are talking about
cigarettes or other inhaled products.

So compete. But compete on a basis of "buy mine because it's
better", rather than "buy mine because it's the only game in
town and I intend to keep it that way".
People can make an awful lot of money by adding value to
things that are otherwise free. Just ask the Red Hat folks.
If they're on ham frequencies you can do anything you like
with signals you hear. This includes reverse-engineering them.
