Subject: Source document for Maidenhead ?

Can someone point me to the source document that specifies exactly how
Maidenhead locations are annotated. I need chapter and verse for a
specification I'm working on. In particular, I need to know if the
letters *must* be upper case, or if they can be mixed.

e.g. I know "IO91SX" is OK, but what about "io91sx" or "IO91sx"?

Also, someone told me that "zz" is acceptable for the last two letters
if the real letters aren't known; e.g. "IO91zz". Has anyone ever seen
this specified anywhere?

I'm sure John will be able to help. Likewise, I've not seen him post for a
while, but with the dubious quality of much of what goes on here, I'm not
too surprised! John was not only involved, he was very much the architect
(along AFAIR with an SM, whose call unfortunately escapes me) of the
so-called Maidenhead Locator system, although he is probably too modest to
readily admit it. I remember well many pub-based evenings with John, Ian
G3SEK, Chris G4DGU, Geoff G3NAQ and others in the late seventies/early
eighties and can attest the veracity of what I have written above! I always
had to drive 20 or so miles home, so the memory was not totally lost in an
alcohol induced haze!

Nevertheless, Ian probably remembers more of the detail than me.

I guess you should contact G4ANB, the original proposer.

There is an extended accuracy option for the MH locator, consisting of
2 additional digits each 0-9, representing the sublocation within
the square.

e.g. JO21RL45

(approved at the iaru conference region 1, 1993)
