Hi Cathryn

The advice given is unsound I am afraid!

You don't need any test equipment apart from a VOM to get started on
microwaves. All you need is a little patience!

There is a range of kits and modules available from numerous suppliers
that will get you started from 23cms - 24 GHz. None need any major test
gear to build and alignment help can be supplied from the large number
of active and willing microwavers already on the band, many of whom do
have the neccesary equipment - but more importantly the experience at
GHz frequencies.

I built my first microwave equipment with nothing more than a few basic
tools, a fine tipped soldering iron, a home made anti-static work
station (actually a cakeboard covered in aluminium foil!) and a
voltmeter. Final alignment was carried out with the voltmeter and then a
small homemade milliwatt meter (a diode and a 50r resistor)

I got the unit checked out by Charlie G3WDG who confirmed all was OK.
My best DX - 750km using 80 mw.

The same experience can be applied to almost any of the microwave bands
currently available.

Hope that enlightens you alittle!

Leave the test gear to later - maybe!

Come and enjoy microwaves - you'll enjoy the challenge!

Not reasonable to do this with RF involved.
Try out the the Ubiquitious Network idea
and the relevant Infra-Red link some
Australians invented.

Your compiler might accept it, but if I were your manager, I sure as
hell wouldn't. :-)
