raises the cost floor for a competitive exchange carrier above that of
what the local exchange carrier pays.
Other tricks LECs pull are: restricting access to central office
facilities, provide substandard facilities for interconnection, losing
paperwork, "tripping" over cables, etc.. The stunts the local
exchange carriers pull are numerous and when properly documented, can
convince the local regulators to keep raising tariffs.

it took 10 plus years for competition in the long distance market to
work. It looks like it will take another 10 years for competition in
the local loop market. There still really isn't competition in the
cellular phone market.
It doesn't happen fast. it will take generations before the
transition is complete. I do not expect to live to see the end of the
monopolies in telecommunications and I'm only 43. I think my nieces
and nephews will raise children in a vastly different, and hopefully
better landscape.

simple, run a newsreader... oh, or is that not what you meant. If you
want to run and an nntp server such as INN, you'll need to purchase a
commercial package such as dnews.

unfortunately, creating newsgroups on the fly gives you a lot of
misspelled newsgroup names. Don't worry about reinventing the wheel
with regards to newsgroups. follow the practices of Usenet and you
won't go far wrong.

you're probably right. Only difference would be that I wouldn't be a
part of the conversation because I can't stomach current packet
technology. I admit it, I'm a speed snob. ;-)

there are some ways of making Windows route all that traffic but you
are better off using your Linux box as your gateway to both the
Internet and the 44... network. Much cleaner solution and more
supportable.

Hi Walter,
That's a good web page. How did he get the screen shots?

Subject: TCP/IP over Flexnet ?
I am presently using Linux to access our Flexnet neighbourg node and
I want to keep in touch with some remote TCP/IP stations.
My main problem is to make a route using an AX25 callsign coz this
last one is definitely not a TCP/IP station.
So does anyone know how to work TCP/IP over flexnet using
Linux without JNOS/TNOS ??

On looking at the registry it is just how they have named it. I've
actually now added in the registry an extra modem simply called PK12
pointing at COM1.
The only other minor glitch was that the serial cable that came with my
CE devices for linking to the main PC for synchronisation etc. would not
work with a packet modem unless pins 2/3 were swapped. I just added an
extra cable with appropriate plug/socket between the PK12 and the CE
serial cable with the cabling for those two pins inverted at one end.
Now I just need simple Pocket Access logging program for the CE device!
Many thanks to all respondents.
