You just posted to one, so presumably you have _some_ level of
access! :)
1. If you have access to a news server where you live in
Venezuela, you need only use a news reader and subscribe to the news
groups that interest you (in the US virtually all Internet Service
Providers include a news server in their services but in other nations
that may not be the case). Assuming you are using a Windows compatible
computer, the new reader generally considered the best available is
Forte Agent, available in both freeware and commercial versions (the
commercial version adds email and some buzzes and whistles). You can
download Agent from http://www.forteinc.com If your machine doesn't run
Windows, let me know what it runs by private email and I'll be glad to
find an appropriate program for your use.
2. If you don't have access to a news server via your service
provider, you can subscribe to a commercial news server for a very
reasonable price. Assuming you use a dial-up connection (their rates
increase with the connection speed you use--which is irrelevant for text
only groups but important for binary groups as they limit you to the
subscribed speed), the best available service is Altopia
(http://www.altopia.com). Altopia offers over 79,500 news groups, no
censorship, no time or traffic limits, multiple feeds, etc. and charges
US$12.00/mo for full Usenet access. If you have a higher speed
connection, Airnews (http://www.airnews.net) which charges US$10.77/mo
and offers uncensored access to 32,000 news groups and a free customized
copy of the commercial version of Forte Agent with your subscription.
3. If for some reason you can't access a standard news server,
you can still access the Usenet free by going to http://www.dega.com and
using their online news server. It's _much_ slower than any other
approach, but it _does_ permit you to access the Usenet.
Hope that helps.

Hello Rob,
nice spoken! The same time at the IARU-Region 1 conference in
Lillehammer they are complaining about falling microwave activities
(only seeing narrow band radio, of course...) they will never learn!

I have been on holiday to the USA, must be about 10 years ago by now,
and I was in your area as well. I had a 2M trx and packet equipment
with me. The network was in the state described above: lots of nodes,
connects to nearly all of them very slow. Connect to a BBS yields
its welcome text, hardly can make it past the registration within the
timeout.
I hope for you the network has improved a little, since then. And
that most nodes are not a "56k UHF-100W / 19.2K VHF -50W" box.
