Again, cross-posting should rarely be necessary. Many times, a long-
running thread results from a single cross-posted article, and its
content drifts further and further away from being "on-topic" in the
various NGs which receive each and every followup.

posted on the 15th of each month.

Hi Duncan,

Worry no more. Windows CE comes with it's own built in TERMINAL program
almost
identical to the one built into Windows 3.1. So whatever model you choose,
you
have the software to "talk" to your TNC. Granted, there is hardly any ham
software for the CE operating system but it does work nice with packet. I
have
an "old" 4MB Casio Casiopiea A-11. I use a Paccomm PicoPacket that works
nicely with it. I check DX clusters and log in thru Nodes up into Canada from
Northeast PA all on something that fits in a fanny pack. Word has it that
there is an APRS version coming out for Windows CE. That will be great.
Hardware wise is almost as simple as hooking up a regular desktop or laptop
except the handheld devices are all made to "talk" to desktops. Their serial
ports are wired as if they were a device (ie: modem or serial printer) versus
a
desktop or laptop. Go to Radio Shack and get yourself a null modem adapter.
They come in 9-pin and 25 pin, which ever you need to make the connection. I
also had to use a low profile gender changer inbetween the HPC cable and TNC
but it works nicely. I'm sorry I can't give you any advice on any of the
newer
handheld devices since my Casio suites my needs and is actually 4 years old.
Good luck and don't be afraid to experiment.

Hi Paul -- possibility -- move the HT as far away from the computer as
possible, better still use an external antenna. Computer noise can swamp
out signals. Seen this several times in HT based installations.

You'll want two next :)

I got a killer deal on a pair at Dayton, I'm still the only SSTV op in my
area, but I love them. Demoed them to our EOC director, he was floored.
We'll be using them a lot for emergencies.
