Hello

For the collation of information about USB to Serial
Adaptors.

I've been using the "Data Communication" USC - 2000 for
quite a while with a FAX demodulator. Fine ...Except it does
seem to give some quite strong harmonics on 2 meters , which
might be a problem. Shielding the device , as well as
applying some cable slip on ferrites help , but mainly in
some detuning of said harmonics. You might find them
elsewhere.
The Harmonics , that is.
Installation - use, fine . No Problemo.

Then I have used for a shorter time a "Vivanco" Device.
Smaller, shorter cable, no installation problem , no
external noise noticed. "Noticed" means "I" have had no
problem.
* The Serial connection is a DB 9 Male with "Prodruding
studs to facilitate screwon connection (Female) to external
device , and might not be removed. This might give you a
"mechanical" problem to connect to external 232 devices
which might have a non - removeable - Screws or whatever
holders which ARE in the way...

To overcome said problems I installed a PCI Card "Multi I/O
Netmos Card."
Fine, no problems. Somewhat confugurable in WIN XP. It uses
2 Cable connections of the old kind from card to edge Holder
(the part of metal which affixes device to frame) I had to
use a DB 26 ( the bigger one) Connector for some special
device , which plugged in fine and had its own bracket.) No
problemo.

There is a quite cheaper card for 2 serial ports on the
marked , no Buffers, no 16550 chips , but no installation
problems , worked fine for my slow (Packet applications too)
(Netobjects , Fusion , 172005, Dolphin pheriperals )

Yes , it is a pain to have only one granted port. Even in
the old days (like 2005 ) I had installed 2 extra ports on
my old Pentibum 2.

Recommendation : If you can , use a PCI double or more ports
card.
USB gives you still the HOT pluggable option, but some cable
adaptors may be noisy electrically (2M)

For "" VERY"" sensitive devices (speedwise) In fast , modern
Computers (Running XP) check the "RANG" of PCI cards
sequence, top , or "1) is usually the speediest. (No problem
here)

So far, for month now , I had never a Blue screen coming up
in connection with b4 said USB to serial devices. I
hotplugged them , usually at the USB side as one would .

They show up in the Hardware Mangler as : Prolific Port.
Number ### what ever that means. Devices sensitive to the
adjustmend of the FIFO and/or
16550 Chips did not show any recognition of adjustment ,
unlike a real serial port. (Probably depends on the make)

I have seen 4 different USB to Serial Coverters now on the
marked . I had used 2. Fine. Some noise problem (See above)
You do not have to open the can, small installation, too.

In time , you will wonder what happened to the rear of your
Computer.
We , as Hams , working wireless are not used to whats
happening there.
Some of the Workings now are external. It seems. Like the
guts on the outside and the Computer chip, its "Heart"
getting smaller. Well , nothing new , EH , Comrade?
