I found this thread very interesting, I've a Socket 370 Book PC with a
CentaurHauls/Cyrix MIII 533MHz CPU that runs constantly at 80 degrees
Celsius, and is quite happy. I've tried changing the heatsink and fan to
effect a lower temperature without making any difference.
There are two other sensors on the Motherboard, the Chipset runs at a very
variable 25 to 35 degrees Celsius, and something referred to as an AUX,
gives a fairly constant reading of 22 degrees Celsius.
According to some on here the CPU should have died some time ago with
localised components possibly attaining 90 degrees Celsius, but it's still
running OK.
It did start to fall over recently, and sometimes fail to boot, but this
is a common Mains PSU problem, that I fixed with a couple of replacement
electrolytic caps, although to start with I noted that the BIOS has a
maximum figure of 75 degrees Celsius CPU Core as the shutdown temperature
for the machine!
I disabled the BIOS feature as I felt that possibly this was causing the
problem, to no avail, hence the swapping of heatsinks with larger fans
that was tried.
I'll be upgrading the processor to an Intel 1GHz PIII Socket 370 CPU, with
yet another heatsink and fan, since I want to run WinXP on it, so I'll be
interested in the CPU Temperature when this is done.
Maybe CentaurHauls/Cyrix MIII CPU's are designed to run this hot? Anyone
know?
