Hi Warren et al.
I understand that your good self, the man from the Game-park ("La
Varenne") in Normandy (Or one whose parents supported a certain American
revolutionary General), who is an expert on everything, (At least it said
so in your personal advertising ;) ) is out of the ball-park in your
understanding of a certain computer terminology, namely "BIOS".
Apparently, (I never saw the original letter) you took to task a more
knowledgable, (At least in this instance) individual who had an accurate
grasp of its meaning. :(
"BIOS" does NOT stand for "Basic Output Input System", (As you erroneously
termed it I believe? I thought that you Yanks could spell and writt proper
like what we do? ;)) NEITHER does it stand for the inane gobbledegook
"Boot Interval Operating System"
(It sounds like a walking tea-break to me).
> The computer inputs-outputs nothing during boot, the BIOS is simply the
> "starter motor" that cranks the engine over, tells the computer to run
> through the drive order to find the OS on the HD or a boot disk in
> another drive, a bootable disk.
Partly correct, as for the remains, in a word, borelocks :). You are
beginning to believe in your own advertising my good man ;)).
What it actually entails AND stands for, is what the the other chap (?)
correctly stated and that is ...
"Basic Input Output System"
It is BASIC(ally) (CHECKING OUT that the) INPUT and OUTPUT System(s) ARE
in good working order.
That is why the machine might hang\crash or freze IF bad RAM is
encountered as it checks through the system hardware (And software), or
comes across a bad Video card driver, which will show on screen as rubbish
as it hangs.
Checking that the HDDs and FDD's are present is but a small portion of its
duties and the reason for its existence as it hunts for an Operating
System. It is also checking out (In the case of XP and other OSs capable
of it) the existence of new hardware USB for instance) and the presence of
associated drivers.
With regard to another gem from across the pond...
> Now don't get your Inuets and Eskomos mixed up! The people are Eskimo,
> the tribe is Inuet, you have North America and Asia confused.
Where does Asia come into the equation? Have I missed something? (Easily
done of course as I miss many letters, including the one which gave rise
to this remark).
The Innuit (Not "Inuets" as far as I know) are indeed a tribe of Eskimos
who live in the Northern wastes of Canada and Quebec etc. the last I
heard. Which ones live in Asia?
Is Brightraven brighter or duller today?
