If there is a mismatch at the amplifier, then keeping the 
interconnecting cable short, example less than 0.1 wavelength, then the 
impact of any impedance transformation in the transmission line is not 
so severe. It is best to adjust the tuning on the input circuits of the 
amplifier to achieve a VSWR of 1:1 !!

At my station the coax is less than 3 feet between exciter and my 
amplifier, AL80B.
