Hi guys,
You are getting me all confused! After a moment's reflection thoug, at
least SOME sense can be made.
The whole problem with ANY keyboard is the lack of symbols found in
common script, so we make substitutions. THIS is where much confusion
lies.
That "degree symbol (')" is an apostrophe! Pardon my ignorance, but I
have never seen it used in any language script as such. Some language
keyboards use letters not found in other languages such as the Spanish
(pardon my phonetics) "enyay" which is an "ennay" (N) with a ~ over it.
Don't even go into Greek!
Because many foreign words have been adopted by English, the accent sign
` is common to the British and US keyboards.
Yes the carat ^ denotes a control character, but not only in common
script. I won't give examples because they play hob with the system, so
I'll just say that a control C for example is read AS a control C and
performs that function in command strings. Somebody out there seems to
have forgotten how to write DOS command strings for setting modem and TNC
parameters. (;->)
Windows "scripts" use common keyboard characters instead of special
control characters, such as when ; precedes a line it is ignored. Writers
use it for placing notes in the script for the HUMAN rather than the
electronic reader which would interpret the line as a command if not
preceded by the semicolon. RIGHT, Roger? (;->)
Ah, the evolution of DOS has led us in some rather confusing directions,
and those who substitute characters rather than writing out the words
(such as DEGREES) leave us wondering what alien language we are reading.
