I leave an answering machine permanently on to screen out unwanted calls,
something I expect a lot of people do.

I heard it give its six rings, "Leave a message." then a voice. People who
know me will call "pick up" or similar. A common practice.

So I picked up, to hear a voice from nearer Bombay than Burnley waffling
on about something. I broke in, whereupon she asked if I was on a BT
line. I said "why?", she said "get Stuffed!" in a very angry voice.

Naturally, if she had waited through six rings, then started her spiel,
only to realise she had been talking to an ansering machine, she would be
rather upset.

Not as upset as I would have been If I had actually been forced to talk to
her.

When I asked her if she was trying to sell me something, she broke into a
long stream of words I didn't understand. I don't know how long she
carried on as I put the 'phone down.

The don't say 'Goodness gracious me' anymore obviously. I also wondered
why they go to the expense of ringing all the way from India to sell you
something.

She was definitely not one of the local Pakis, they lose a lot of the
Peter Sellars accent when they come to England.

NB. 'Pakis' is not an illegal, insulting word. We Brits came up with the
word 'PakiS' as an anagram of Punjab,Kashmir and some other place starting
'Si...' before Pakistan even existed. Ergo. Pakistan is where the Pakis
live, just as Kurdistan is where the Kurds live and Afghanistan is where
the Afghans live (not Afghanis as some people seem to think). Not guilty
milord.

My ansafone trick + signing up to something called TPR or similar, means I
hardly ever get a sales call, so this was more amusing than annoying.

My condolences to those who get swamped with this 'phone version of spam.

All the best from - Ian, G0TEZ @ GB7FCR
