Hi, I 've not really been paying attention to this topic as I very rarely
use a mobile phone, although I always have one available in the car.
A lot of the members at my local radio club have now migrated from the
usual fixed-phoneline and even the "mobile phone" where one has to pay
rather high amounts for their calls.
They have gone over to "Skype" and other internet based providers. They
use this both in this country and abroad.
They do not use a "phone" to make their phone-calls, instead they use a
PDA or other similar device that utilises WiFi or other 2.4 GHz connection.
Just be within range of a WiFi hotspot ( most airports have them ) and their
"phonecalls" cost them a big fat zilch if the destination is also on Skype,
or about 1p a minute to a normal landline or mobile.
The WiFi access point at the local radio club is now used more for "phonecalls"
than for regular web access.
How times change.
73, Pete G6KUI
