Agreed Neil, and I have a horizontal log periodic Yagi, along with an RF
amp to do the DX.
But the original question was to do with SSB handhelds, and yes, not
exactly efficient into a rubberduckie antenna, but then, neither is the
average FM handheld. What we were looking to do was to possibly popularise
the idea of using SSB for handhelds and portables, simply as an
alternative to the standard FM.
And yes, most SSB users are serious about their DX'ing, but why not have a
little fun as well? FM repeaters are almost like phones, and are about as
much fun. I just think it would be nicer to take my SSB rig down to the
park on a lovely sunny day and sit down enjoying the fresh air and
sunshine, and have a quiet natter to a mate across the city on SSB, rather
than the ubiquitous FM.
