All desktop PSU's which I have come across since the early days of the
PC have been of the switch mode type.

The laptop switch mode PSU is fairly easy to replace with a single
voltage linear PSU, most seem to require around 19v. Three 6v lead acid
batteries would also work.
I also often use my laptop (19v input) on my linear 13.8v rig PSU. It
will happily run on voltages down to 10v and just about manages to
charge at 13.8v.
To isolate the radio from a PC, I found an old audio transformer to be
quite effective. With a little more messing about I once managed to use
an opto-coupler with an Hamcom type interface.
