I don't argue - I write bulls for info or debate. I enjoy researching
and writing about topics which interest me. It's my hobby you see.

I don't see packet as a battle of wits - I'm only interested in
intelligent, balanced, well-informed debate, than arguing just
for the sake of it.

>Your ideas are firmly fixed.

Not so.

My ideas and opinions change in the light of fresh information, but facts
are fixed.

If I quote factual information from respected Australian sources I'm
not likely to change my mind if you disagree.(You aren't disagreeing
with me, but with Australian experts on matters of fact).

I don't mind if value your wisdom above theirs, but I hope you'll
understand why I often don't concur with your opinions.

Don't confuse opinions with facts!

However often an opinion is repeated it doesn't become a fact.

Here's a fact which was central to my bulletin:

An aboriginal man was beaten to death in custody on Palm Island by
a police officer. I deduced that fact from the coroner's report.

Another fact:

A Royal Commission into deaths of indigenous people in custody made
many recommendations, which are being implemented.

Based on my understanding of criminal law and legal processes, (of which
not living in Albany doesn't pose a handicap to me) here's an opinion:

I believe there's sufficient evidence to bring the matter to trial on a
charge of manslaughter. I base my opinion on two things which the DPP
must consider:

a) That a prosecution is in the public interest.
b) That there is a realistic prospect of a conviction.

It's just my opinion that there should be a prosecution and I'm open to
alternative views based on sound legal principles. (But if someone said
"He deserved all he got" I wouldn't consider that a sensible response).

So, in your opinion as a doyen of all things Australian do you consider
it's acceptable for police officers to beat people to death in custody.

If so, why?

If not, do you accept that when a police officer has been named by a
coroner who's said the officer caused the fatal injuries and failed
to get medical help, that he should be prosecuted?

If not, why?

If he isn't, do you think that's in the interests of developing more
harmonious relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous people?

You haven't expressed an opinion on any of these things, yet what you did
do is to comment on the very issues I specifically said I didn't want to
discuss - the broader issues of indigenous people, not to mention
politics.

But since you went down that line I quoted Australian sourced factually
correct info on the highly emotive and complex issues of indigenous
people.

If you can show where that (Australian sourced) info is wrong,
and in what way it's wrong, then of course I'll change my mind.

But you haven't, and you can't.

Royal Commissions, a coroner, universities, HREOC and the National
Library, all based in Australia. They all looked fine to me - Which bits
are wrong?

>Your posts have not one word of personal experience of the place.

You imply that for anyone to say anything about Oz they must live there.
Totally irrelevant. (You don't live on Palm Island. So what?).

The very reason I use respected Australian sources is to
make sure I don't put out false or misleading information.

>You might get a cultural shock if you happened to come and live here for
>a while.

Careful Bob - if I came I'm sure I'd want to stay:-)

Some might say we deserve each other!

>I don't know how many kB you have spent on the subject of Australia
>but it must be in the megabytes now.

Agreed.

Some send out megabites of 7+ pictures of nothing in particular, others
send out recipes.

With me it's human rights and wrongs, etymology, ecology, law and order,
crime and punishment, economic, social, political and industrial history,
belief systems, green issues, sundry trivia etc.

Some find these topics deadly dull - I don't. Each to their own.

Remember that you aren't disagreeing or arguing with me, but with
Australian experts in their field. Do you see the difficulty I have
in understanding that?

And the odd thing is, that almost everything I've ever said about Oz
is complementary, yet you still get the wrong impression and talk of
my "agenda" and tell me to "lay off Australia".

>No more from me.

If I had a cent for every time you've said that, I'd have the return air
fare to Oz. (Business class:-)

>Waffle on, David.

Thank you for your kind invitation. I'm happy to accept.

Try not to take me, yourself, and packet quite so seriously Bob. We're
just a couple of telnet typists with rather too much time on our hands.

(I'll wait for the usual response "6k of 'EBT waffle deleted").
