Until  the  last  couple of months, yes. The UP  main  line  from 
Chicago  to Omaha across Iowa is running 50 to 60 trains  a  day, 
most  of  them at least a mile long, some two  miles  long.  Some 
times  a train on a branch line has to wait hours to get  on  the 
main line.

Last  August I rode from Winnipeg to Vancouver in  Canada,  about 
2500 miles and not once did I see a freight train in a siding for 
the  passenger  train to pass. Many times we took  a  siding  and 
waited for a freight to fly by. This was almost all single track.

Same  thing from Seattle to Fargo, in the US, another  2500  mile 
ride  though  it  seemed  like more pauses  were  at  small  town 
stations when the freight rolled by going the opposite direction.
