Until the last couple of months, yes. The UP main line from
Chicago to Omaha across Iowa is running 50 to 60 trains a day,
most of them at least a mile long, some two miles long. Some
times a train on a branch line has to wait hours to get on the
main line.
Last August I rode from Winnipeg to Vancouver in Canada, about
2500 miles and not once did I see a freight train in a siding for
the passenger train to pass. Many times we took a siding and
waited for a freight to fly by. This was almost all single track.
Same thing from Seattle to Fargo, in the US, another 2500 mile
ride though it seemed like more pauses were at small town
stations when the freight rolled by going the opposite direction.
