Hi. Is the surface of DVD RAM discs more vunerable to damage than the +R
and -R discs, and pre-recorded video discs? I ask because I have a
portable DVD player that can play single-sided DVD RAM discs, which I use
in my DVD recorder. Like the double-sided discs, these come in a
cartridge, but unlike them, single-sided ones can be removed so that they
will play in, for example, my portable player.

Since DVD RAMs can be edited, this opens up the possability of recording
and editing, then copying them from the portable onto a DVD-R so that the
recording can be kept and the RAM disc re-used. At last, a real use for
the playlist feature!

Since the disc works just as will in the DVD recorder without being in it's
cartridge, I'd consider getting some empty DVD cases to store them in, to
save the fiddly business of taking them in and out of the container (which in
itself might result in the surface getting scratched). Also, I'd take
these on holiday, probably in one of those CD cases with polythene pockets,
or else in slim CD cases if this would be safer.

They don't look any more likely to be subject to damage (but they do have
this odd pattern of "dots" all over them). I just assumed they might be
more easily damaged, hence the cartridge (though obviously this is
necessary for the double-sides ones anyway).
