Hi Bob

I like the story of your family. I suppose you could trace it on one of
these genealogy web sites but they cost money for all but the most basic
information.

I have what history of my family I can find from two sources. My youngest
brother, the vicar, did a lot of research while he was still a teenager.
Naturally, I don't use my real name on anything to do with the internet
but my real name is unusual so it was easy for him to trace my family
using church records etc; he found that they were originslly from Scotland
following a mas exodus a thousand yers ago, I don't know why. They were
just crofters, in fact the name means 'crofter', They settled in the E
midlands of England, then, 600 years ago, most of them moved to the N W
where they are now. Nobody important anywhere, no nobility etc: in fact
they were mainly cobblers until about 200 years ago when they became
cotton barons with a lot of money but no titles. They lost their money
around WW II with the demise of cotton due to Ghandi so I am not rich.

The more modern history came from my aunt Florrie who taught me to read
and write and a lot of other things as well. I believe what she taught me
as she was a very devout christian, maiden lady who was a retired
headmistress, so believable and not stupid. NB she really was christened
Florrie, not Florence.

The more interesting side from my point of view was my mother's side, it
would appear that I inherited my appearence and, after a full gene test,
the excellent health of my maternal grandfather, known as 'Long Sid'. He
was the black sheep of the family. Apparently he was very popular among
all the mill girls and, the part which upset his family most was that he
married a girl of 22 when my grandmother died. He was 62.

he died aged 93, a tall, thin man with long white hair down to his
shoulders.

After his death, I met up with a lot of women aged around 85 who told me
that I was exactly like him when he was a young man. All the illnesses I
have ever had have been caused by accidents exept for the hypothyroidism I
developed 8 years ago. Other than that, I have always been a rapid healer,
otherwise very healthy and have still got long, thick hair which is still
grey.black so, if I manage to reach 93 I don't think I will have lost it.

In addition, I have had a full DNA test which came back with the report
"you have no genes for any diseases except for rheumatoid arthritis which
you haven't got" - quite true.

So 'thank you' grandad, I owe you a lot!

I am hitting the 'three score and ten' now and I don't think that thyroid
deficiency kills you so, who knows ?

There were rumours that grandad ws popular with the girls and,
occasionally, I see people who look very like me but are not related, at
least, not officially. It sounds as though he had a fun life and so have
I.

I can't possibly compete with your antecedents but it is a great story!

I like the bit about your bro in law's father, especially the 30 year age
difference and not marrying until he was 70. Perhaps it was like the Benny
Hill song "Why buy a book when there's a perfectly good lending library in
the town."

As I said, with my grandad it was a 40 year age gap. I can't beat that but
did marry my seconf wife when she was 17 and I was 39, only a 22 year gap
so I can't beat that but, after number 2, I remember having a couple of
girl friends aged 20 when I was 50 (they knew my age too) I still see one
of them from time to time she was 39 last year.

Naturally, I am a big believer in genetics :-)

Sorry if that was along waffle but it does go back to the 1870s.

My regards and may we still be in contact in 20 years time. TTFN.
