4U, UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS. On June 9th, Fritz, N6UK/DL4TT, will be
in New York and plans his next operating session at the club station 4U1UN.
The band choice will depend on shortwave conditions and the status of the
roof/antenna work going on at the moment. Mode will be CW. As usual, QSL
only via Box 3873, Grand Central Station New York, NY 10163 USA.
4W, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF TIMOR LESTE. Thor, 4W3DX, continues to be active
on 21002 kHz after 1330z and 14002 kHz between 1300-1800z. Also, watch
around 7005 kHz after 0945z. Peter, 4W3CW, has also been active at various
times on 40/30/20/15/10 meters. Watch cluster spots for him.
5B, CYPRUS. Alan, G3PMR, is expected to be active as 5B4AHJ until June
22nd. QSL direct to home call.
5X, UGANDA. Christian, 5X1CW, was heard this past week on 21005 kHz around
1930z. He can sometimes be found on 14005 kHz around the same time. QSL
via his home callsign F6GQK (See notes under QSL INFO AND NEWS).
7P8, LESOTHO (DXpedition Update - Also 3DA callsigns announced!). Team
Leader Charles Frost, K5LBU/7P8TA, announced this past week that the
"July 18-25th Lesotho 7P8 DXpedition" sponsored by the Lone Star DX
Association and the Texas DX Society has added an amateur satellite mode
to its planned operations. The operation will be on the AO-40 satellite.
"The uplink will be U--band (70cm) uplink on U-band 435.550 to 435.800 MHz
CW/LSB and S2 (2.4GHz) downlink 2401.225 - 2401.475 MHz CW/USB", Frost
said. Equipment including antennas and a down converter were donated by
Wayne Estes, W9AE, and a spare down converter was donated by Bruce Paige,
KK5DO. The list of operators are:

operating from Swaziland (3DA) after 7P8. Their callsigns will be 3DA0SV
for Dave/K4SV and 3DA0WC for Neil/VA7DX. QSL via their home callsigns.

9A, CROATIA (Islands Activated). Tibor, 9A/HA3HP, plans to activate some
of Croatian islands as:

CQ0, PORTUGAL. The "Association of Radioamadores da Vila de Moscavide"
(ARVM) will be active with the special callsign CQ0FY during their Field
Day (June 14-15th) to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the A.R.V.M.
QSL via CT1RVM, direct or by the bureau.
DA, GERMANY (Special Event/Field Day Activity). On the first weekend of
June (7th/8th), the European CW-Field Day-Contest will take place. Helmut,
DL7MAE, reports that "this is one of the biggest events for German hams
during the entire DX-year. Many can learn how to build up a Contest or
emergency station and to learn how to set up a station for a DXpedition.
Our club this year will have more antennas up then ever." The reason is,
that the city of Erding (next to Munich) is celebrating its 775th
anniversary with festivities and amateur radio activity. The Erding Radio
Club wants to give as many DXers and Award hunters as possible the chance
to work their "775 Years City of Erding" award. DX stations need to only
work them on three bands to qualify for the award, while EU stations need
only four bands. The award is "FREE" of charge, only postal-fee is required.
Their callsign will be DA0ED/p and a QSL will be sent through the bureau
for each contact automatically. Details of their QSL card and award (now
rules are also in English) and much other information about their local
Erding club can be found on the Web page at: http://www.ov-erding.de
EN720, UKRAINE (Special Event). Look for special event callsign, EN720K,
to be active from now through July 15th to celebrate the 720th Anniversary
of the Rivne City. Stations will be operated by members of Rivne DX Club:
Paul/UT1KY (ex-EM1KY), Igor/UR5KCE and Taras/UR5KDX. QSL Manager is IK1GPG:
Massimo Balsamo, Strada Statale 28 Nord # 7, I-12084 Mondov=EC (Cuneo),
ITALY. All QSLs will be sent automatically via the Bureau.
FO & FO/A, FRENCH POLYNESIA AND AUSTRAL ISLANDS (IOTA Op). Look for
operators Barry/G4MFW (ZS1FJ and ZL1MFW) and Phil/G3SWH to be on Mangareva
Island in the Gambier Islands of French Polynesia (IOTA OC-063) and from
Rurutu Island in the Austral Islands (IOTA OC-050) between July 10-22nd.
The actual dates of each operation are to be decided, but they hope to be
on each island for at least five days. Propagation permitting, they will
be active on all bands from 40-10 meters on SSB and CW. They hope to work
as many European, North American and ROTW stations as possible. Special
callsigns have been applied for and will be announced as soon as they are
known. The QSL route(s) will also be announced later. Donations towards
the high cost of this expedition are invited and may be sent to G3SWH.
FH, MAYOTTEE. John Warburton, G4IRN, will be active as FH/G4IRN from
Mayotte Island (AF-027), September 16-23rd. Activity will be on 40-10
meters mainly on CW using only 100 watts into a vertical antenna. QSL
via G4IRN (QRZ.com).
HS0, THAILAND. Charles Harpole, K4VUD, is now active as HS0ZCW until June
15th. He is expected to be active on 80/160 meters, but was heard on 15
and 20 meters CW. Watch around 21025 and 14024 kHz between 1100-1500z.
IOTA NEWS....................
AF-NEW. (UPDATE FROM OPDX.611) Steve, OM3JW, spoke with Ivan/OM3CGN
last week and he was told that in spite of the earthquake
several days ago, everything is OK and the IOTA expedition to
Habbibas Island will be starting with one day delay (June 2nd)
as 7W4HI. Operators will be on island until June 5th. They
will be on the air a minimum of 12 hours daily, it will depend
on the local power. However, they will also have gas for 3
full days of operations. The crew consists of Ivan/OM3CGN,
Afif/7X2RO, three other 7Xs (we don't know their callsigns)
and members of the Coast guard. Steve, OM3JW, will have a
regular daily sked with OM3CGN, so he will be as a pilot
station (E-mail: om3jw@konektel.sk ).
AF-019. Fabio/IT9GSF and a team of operators will activate Lampedusa
Island as IG9A during a few upcoming contests. Look for future
activity as scheduled:
CQ/RJ Worldwide DX RTTY Contest (September 27-28th) Multi-Op
CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest (October 25-26th) Multi/2
CQ World Wide DX CW Contest (November 29-30th) M/S or SOAB
AS-024. Operators Kaoru/JA3MCA, Aru/JA0KNM, Jun/JJ1EQW and Kai/JE3NJZ
will be active as homecall/JR6 from Hateruma Island, Yaeyama
Archipelago, Okinawa, June 6-9th. Activity will be on 40-2
meters SSB and CW. QSL via their home callsigns, direct or
bureau.
AS-058. Johnny, G3LIV, will be active as 9M2/G3LIV from Langkawi
Island until June 9th. Activity will be mainly on CW with
some PSK31. QSL via his home callsign.
AS-073. Tex, 9M2TO, will once again be active from Perhentian Island
from a resort, June 7-8th. Activity will be CW on 80-10 meters
including the WARC bands. He will use an IC-706 w/100w into
a G5RV antenna. QSL via JA0DMV (All QSL cards will be sent
out automatically).
AS-147. Taka/JR3TVH and Natsue/JJ3NAW will be on Rebun Island and
Rishiri Island from July 25-30th, signing homecall/8. Look
for them on 40/20/17/15/10/6 meters CW/SSB. QSL via JR3TVH
either direct or via the bureau.
EU-083. Operators Giovanni/IZ2DPX, Michele/IK2GPQ, Antonello/IK2DUW
and Lorenzo/IK5MDF, who were active this past week as IP1TIN
from Tino Island (IIA SP-002), will be active again July
26-27th. Activity will be on 40-10 meters CW/SSB/RTTY/PSK31.
EU-115. Berthold, DF5WA, who was active last week as EJ/DF5WA from
the Aran Islands (EU-006), will be active this week as EI/DF5WA
from the Irish Coast (EU-115) until June 7th. His activity
will be mainly on CW. QSL via bureau.
EU-125. Helmut, DL7VOX, is expected to be active as SP1/DL7VOX/p from
Wolin Island until June 14th. Activity will be on all HF bands
including the WARC bands. QSL via bureau.
EU-171. Alan, G0RCI, and other operators from the Grantham Amateur
Radio Club will be active from Fur Island between June 2-6th
as OZ/G0GRC. Activity will be on all bands CW, SSB and maybe
SSTV and other modes. QSL cards are not required because
all QSOs will be acknowledged within 28 days of the operators'
return.
EU-174. Emil, SV8/DJ4PI/p, will be active from Thassos Island, June
5-18th. QSL 100% via his home callsign and Bureau.
OC-140. The "VK6 DX Chasers Club" will travel to Thevenard Island
(Mackerel Island group) and be active for 1 week starting June
15th. The Mackerel Islands group, comprising of 10 islands, is
situated 22km offshore from the town of Onslow, 1400km north
of Perth, on the coast of the spectacular and ancient Pilbara
region of Western Australia. The callsign for the DXpedition
will be a special one, VI6TI, to commemorate the naming of the
island by the French Captain Baudine who led an expedition in
1801-1804 in the ship "Casuarina". Captain Baudine named the
island after the Vice Admiral and Minister 1732-1815 - Antoine
John Mary France Thevenard. The 8 member team will leave Perth
on Friday, June 13th and hopes to be active from the island on
Sunday, June 15th, around 0700 or 0800z. Activity will be on or
near the usual IOTA HF frequencies. There will also be activity
on 6 meters with a 3 elment beam for this band. They will monitor
50.110 MHz. The group's previous DXpedition in November 2000 to
nearby Direction Island netted 550 contacts on 6 meters with
many contacts into Europe. The group is hoping for similar
conditions this time around. For all the satellite enthusiasts,
the group will also be bringing along a portable satellite
station looking for contacts on AO-40. They will have a Yaesu
FT-847 and will operate Mode U/S with a 8 element yagi on the
70cms uplink and 65cms offset dish with K5GNA AIDC 3731AA 2.4GHz
down converter. The grid locator is OG77mm. The QSL Manager is
VK6NE: Neil Penfold, 2 Moss Ct, Kingsley, WA 6026, Australia.
All direct and bureau cards will be answered, and the group
hopes to have a full color card available shortly after the

KH3, JOHNSTON ISLAND. John, KH3/KT6E, continues to be active almost
daily on 20 meters SSB. Watch between 14245-14248 or around 14222 kHz
between 0500-0800z.
KH9, WAKE ISLAND. "QRZ DX" reports that Kimo, KH7U, informs them that
Chuck Brady, N4BQW, left Honolulu Friday, May 30th for Wake Island. He
will be there for the next six weeks standing in for the island's doctor
who is going on vacation. He will be joining Jake, N6XIV, who has been
active on the island recently. Please keep in mind that Chuck is there
to work, and he will only be able to operate when he is not doing the job
he was sent there to do. While there Chuck is going to re-position the
Force 12 C3SS yagi in a better location and install an inverted L with
elevated radials for 80/75/40. On 40 meters, he may be operating below
7.1 MHz, listening up for U.S. calls. He also has a modified military
vertical that can cover 160/80/40 and 30 meters. He is taking two 6 meter
yagis antennas - one of them is a long-yagi from M2. There will be NO 6
meter beacon. He has an Alpha 99 amp, and will use it IF he has access to
240VAC. It may take him at least a few days to get all of the antennas
raised with the help of Jake and island base personnel. Chuck usually
works SSB, but has been known to work some CW on his SSB frequency when
asked and the pileups aren't too bad. Depending on demand, he may QSY to
the CW portions of the bands, but that depends on the antenna situation.
Kimo says, "I am NOT acting as a pilot station NOR am I offering to
schedule QSOs for Chuck." Kimo will be in E-mail and some telephone contact
with Chuck and can provide a route for some FEEDBACK to him. Constructive

KB6NAN. An SAE with sufficient U.S. postage; IRCs or the proverbial "green

always preferred. DO NOT send requests for Jake, N6XIV, to KB6NAN. Follow
Jake's instructions for his QSL routing. There will be NO web page nor
posted logs for this operation.
KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Ikuko, JA5GSG, will operate from Saipan (OC-086)
between June 5-11th. His callsign was not provided. Activity will be on HF
and 6 meters. QSL via his home callsign.
L28, ARGENTINA (Special Prefix). Radio Club Salta, LU4OC, will be operating
as L28OO from June 2-9th from Iruya. It is a little town located at the
very northern part of Argentina close to the Bolivian border, and 2800
meters above sea level. Ariel, LU4OO, reports that it is very difficult
to get to this town located right on the mountains. The team will operate
on all HF bands, SSB, CW and the Digital Modes. QSL via LU4OC. Please visit

NEW AWARD AVAILABLE. Kresimir, 9A7K, informs OPDX that the members of the
Amateur Radio Club "Koprivnica" are issuing "The Pope John Paul II in
Croatia Award" in celebration of the third visit of Pope John Paul II to
Croatia. The rules for this award can be found on the following web site

5X1CW QSLS. Tommy, WE7K, has been asked by Christian, 5X1CW, to pass
along information that he only sends out QSL cards while he is at home
in France once every six months. He asks for everyone's patience. His
next home visit will be this summer. He does not use the bureau but
accepts direct cards to his home callsign F6GQK.
Special event station CQ5AA was active over the past weekend to celebrate
the 15th anniversary of ARVM (Association of Radioamadores da Vila de
Moscavide). QSL via CT1RVM, direct or by the bureau.

Terry, KJ6OW, informs OPDX that he has been doing a mail drop service
for Vit, EZ8CW, for quite a while now. Starting on June 15th, he will
be adding Alex, EZ8CQ, for U.S. hams ONLY to the service. The same
mail requirements will apply (2 USD and a SASE) to get the card.
Gil, F5NOD, announced this past week that all FR/F6KDF/T QSLs received
direct from F6KDF have now been answered. The last batch of QSLs should
be in the mail or be mailed this week (for QSLs received during last
month). Gil hopes everybody will have their QSO confirmed. If you didn't
receive a QSL or if you need a second QSL or have a QSO problem, you
can still send your request to F6KDF or direct to Gil's address (F5NOD
address OK on QRZ.com).

II1D active over the past week was a special callsign for "2003 - The
European Year of People with Disabilities". Activity was a demonstration
of solidarity with the school for disabled boys of Giaveno (Turin) by
IZ1CCE and G.RA.D. (Gruppo RadioAmatori Disabili - Italy Handi Ham).

Phil Whitchurch, G3SWH, reports that he is pleased to announce that all
direct QSL requests for ZS1RBN received to date have been mailed.
SILENT KEY. "MR. HAMVENTION", Frank, W8OK, became a Silent Key Thursday
night, May 29th. For several years, W8OK has been battling cancer. Then,
just days prior to the gates opening for Hamvention 2003, Schwab suffered
a heart attack. He was also dealing with pneumonia and congestive heart
failure. Frank Schwab, W8OK, is credited with getting the Dayton Hamvention
started 52 years ago. Also, he was involved with the founding of SWODXA and
several contest expeditions to J6DX. He will be surely missed by his many
friends in the Dayton area. OPDX and its readers would like to send out
our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
VK, AUSTRALIA (Camerons Corner DX-Expedition). Several members of the
Blue Mountain ARC will be "heading into the outback" on the Queens Birthday
weekend starting Friday, June 6th and returning Monday, June 9th. They
will be heading to the corner of New South Wales (VK2), Queensland (VK4)
and South Australia (VK5). They would like to make contact with as many
people as possible, so if you hear them calling "CQ-DX from Camerons
Corner", you know they are smack in the middle of nowhere. Their suggested

VK9C & VK9X, COCOS KEELING AND CHRISTMAS ISLANDS (Update). Gwen Tilson,
VK3DYL, informs OPDX that due to circumstances beyond their control (world
conditions, flight schedule cancellations etc.), the YLs going to VK9C
and VK9X later this year have had to change their itinerary. They will
now operate from Christmas Island as VK9XYL, October 13-27th, and from
Cocos Keeling as VK9CYL, October 27th-November 10th. VK3DYL still remains
as QSL Manager - more details later.
XW, LAOS. Kamfan, XW1FAN, continues to be active on most days on 14220 or
14225 kHz between 1430-1530z.
YA, AFGHANISTAN. Masa, JG1OWV, informs OPDX that he is helping someone
called Sada (a Japanese operator who is staying in Kabul for one year) to
get on the air. He is now preparing some low band equipment, and he hopes
Sada will get his license this month. The callsign and operation start date
will be announced at a later date. Masa states, "This is not a DXpedition,
but most weekends we may hear an Afghanistan signal."
YV, VENEZUELA. Operators Dario/YV4GMG, Maria/YV4GMB, Hector/YV4GMH,
Jose/YV4FUE and Maria C/YV4FUF are expected to be active on June 10th.
Look for them on the following bands/modes: 10/15/20/160 meters and 6
meters. Modes will be PSK31/RTTY/SSTV/CW/SSB. QSL via operator's CBA.
