Hi Wim and everyone,
Have we all gone double Dutch here.....
I am more than a little surprised that more hams did not know that The
Netherlands was a collection of provinces. That Holland was just part of the
Netherlands.
Surely we all must know that the Fresian Cows, the black and white ones, good
for milk, come from Friesland, a province of the Netherlands and not Holland!!
Wim and I are of the same age, and at school in geography it was The
Netherlands. Amsterdam the capital was in Holland. As we more often refered to
the capital of a country it was Amsterdam in Holland. The less knowledgable
thought Holland was the whole place, but this is not so as has been pointed
out by Wim.
The USA is the USA to me and always has been. America, North, South and
Central covers areas and many countries not a specific one. But I know the USA
types are just beginning to realise that the world is a little bit bigger than
the USA!!!
Andy has made a point about Great Brit and UK, and he should enlarge on this.
I know that the Welsh hate being called English or part of England, as do the
Scots and the Irish. I think there has been one or two arguments over this in
the past and some recent.
There is also Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia, who knows where they are!!
There are all sorts of groupings.
A great topic Wim, lets expand on it and see how many groupings there are and
we may all learn a thing or two.
Great place, The Netherlands, had lots of fun in Holland, Amsterdam, and a few
other places when I was last there.
