Something for CW fans:
There's an really interesting little video on Wall Street Journal online
about CW, which features Chuck Adams, K7QO. Chuck was also featured in an
article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
It's quite a short film - less than 4 mins, covering his life from his
schoolboy interests in amateur radio, to his PhD in Astrophysics, his
interests in QRP (spot the Elecraft) and his ability to use CW at 140WPM
(which still only ranks him 8th in the world!).
He sees no future for the survival of CW - no-one is learning it any
more and as he puts it it's just the "greybeards" now keep it alive.
But one of the things he's doing to try to keep it alive for a little
while longer, is to convert books into CW using a computer program he's
written to convert text into Morse.

The books that he's so far converted to CW, and the speeds, are:
001 Dorothy and the Wizard in OZ 17WPM 680Hz
002 The Time Machine H.G. Wells 20-25WPM 680Hz
003 The War of the Worlds H.G. Wells 20-26WPM 680Hz
004 Desert Gold Zane Grey 20-25WPM 680Hz
005 Dorothy and the Wizard in OZ 20-25WPM 680Hz
006 Robinson Crusoe Daniel Defoe 22-30WPM 680Hz
007 The War of the Worlds H.G. Wells 30-36WPM 700Hz
008 At The Earth's Core 17-25WPM 680Hz
009 Tom Swift Among the Diamond Makers 25-30WPM 680Hz
010 The Runaway Asteroid 25WPM 680Hz
011 Rebels of the Red Planet 20-25WPM 680Hz
100 K7QOs Code Course V3.0 Chuck Adams, K7QO 0-30WPM 680Hz
They're available from his website using Paypal - he only charges a
nominal amount to cover production costs. (IE $10 USD in the States,
and for non-US, $12.5 USD - about œ6.00GBP (and falling as the dollar
heads south!)
Not an advert!
I've got no pecuniary interest in his CW project and
he isn't in it for the money - it's a labour of love.
He also mentions on his website that in an effort to get a group of
serious QRPers together a new group has formed called "QRP Tech" on Yahoo
Groups. This group will be 100% moderated and topics of discussion will
be only QRP operating and building. (The link to the group is on his
site).
What a really nice guy.
Quote of the day:
"I would imagine if you could understand Morse Code,
a tap dancer would drive you crazy".
