I have a book circa 1917,subjects include telegraphy and wireless .
There are examples of various codes, including Morse's morse. In
that version a long dash is the code for zero, also a slightly shorter one
for L . Timing intervals are given but I find them not very clear,eg.
one text says all codes have same spacings and length, with word space
being 3 dot lengths and letter space 2 dots ,dash equals 2 dots, the
long dash equals 4 dots. In the printed tables T appears as a 3
unit symbol, L as 6 units,) 0 as 8 units,E as one.(that is the length of
the printed symbol), so I am a little confused as to what is really meant ,
ie is length of T equal todot space dot (3 units as at present )or dot dot
(2 units) ? As printed T appears as 3 units.
Other codes printed were Bain, U.S Navy , Phillips ,Continental .
Apparently Bain was a Scottish inventor who invented the electric
pendulum clock and a telegraph system, his code had dots and dashes as
per the continental (international) code but not the same (cf Murray and
Baudot codes for machine morse, the revised code taking into account the
frequency of use of letters in text.
Interestingly Websters encyclopedia says Bain was an associate of Morse
and Vaille is not mentioned, whilst most other sources say Vaille was the
man who made the original Morse code workable .
I hope the above is not too boreing and is some help to Andy.
Take care, kindest regards. DE
