I  too  have used  the  long zero.  It  used to  be  fairly  common  practice
especially in contests when exchanging serial numbers.
It can only really be used when numbers are to be expected.
It is used because it is shorter than five dashes,
So I guess it should be called the short zero, not a long zero !
