Your small survey generated a lot of comment but the simple answer to your
questions for me is:-
1B and YES

Just a comment on the 1B.

Aviation maps have the morse code printed on the map for the pilots to
identify beacons etc. Or at least my Aussie maps did 30 years ago! That
was when pilots needed a morse qualification too. Three letter groups each
sent twice was all that was required to be received and nothing
transmitted. No doubt some avionics these days are needed to actually
decode the beacon and display them on the screens of the glass cockpit
instrument display? A bit more disasterous to read a nav beacon wrong than
an IARU beacon!
