To my knowledge the Army abandoned the heliograph c. 1942. Apart from the
danger of snipers I think the advent of reliable portable radio
transmitter/receivers may have been one reason. This period saw the advent
of the 101, FS6 and 108 transceivers which could be moved around, set up
and operating in a minute or two..
