Hi Andrew,
Don't have a recording of a spark gap transmission but it is very
easy to recognise.. If you've ever had problems with interference
from a faulty insulator on the power pole outside your house you'll
get a fair idea what it is similar to. But, not all spark gaps sounded
the same, some had a form of modulation applied to them, I think the
rotary gap spark transmitters came into this category.
We had a spark gap transmitter on one of the naval ships I was on
(circa 1952, I might add) which our routines required us to test every
six months. After doing this just once, we never bothered again because
we blotted out all of the radio signals for miles around in the Sydney
Harbour region !!!!! Needless to say we received the odd complaint or
two or three !!!
