I have no interest in Morse Code any more but thought it might be worth
mentioning Eric, the G0... who taught me Morse for the 12 wpm exam in
1992.

Eric said, and I had never known him to lie, that he had learnt to read up
to 47 wpm during WW II. He said that, at Bletchley Park, the well known
code breaking centre, where he had worked, it was not unusual for all the
female operators to read at that speed.

I did mention this to some local brass pounders who all called me a liar.
I did once here Eric having a QSO with a local Morse enthusiast. The man
had started the QSO with several others who dropped out one by one as they
got faster. I gave up at about 20 wpm and it just sounded like a buzz
after that. After they had finished and sent .... .. I had a word on FM
with Eric and asked him what speed they got up to. He told me he didn't
know but it was nice to go over 30 wpm. He had slowed down when he started
making mistakes.
Eric did say that he had no time for 'side swipers' so I presume he was on
his usual straight key.

Eric has been silent key for a few years now but he was an old style
gentleman and, if he spoke about people operating at 47 wpm, I see no
rerason to doubt him. 73.
