Just watched a one day game of cricket in the Telstra Dome Melbourne,
Australia vs South Africa. What a change in the game out here! The Dome
seats 70 000 I believe. There were 41 000 seated spectators. Coloured
clothing for the players and a white ball of course, nothing new there
these days but the Telstra Dome has a sliding roof many many feet above
the stadium. Part way through the game a storm was obviously coming and
the roof was closed. It was a day/night game anyway and the lights were
on. There was a storm that would have seen the game abandoned but under
the roof, no worries, no interruption of play, and the game proceeded to
the end. The Dome also has football games and other big sporting events
which can be held in the open with the roof opened up or under cover with
it closed. It takes 8 minutes for the top to close completely.
Many of the Australian players would be well known in England through
their playing for various counties in our winter. New fast bowler Brett
(Hunkey) Dorey stands 6'10 tall making Glenn McGrath look like a small man
even though he is around 6'5".
