Yes, Max, as with the hunt-loving English importation of rabbits the fox
was introduced into Australia by the English settlers, so that they could
go tally-hoing round the countryside.
The fact that with the mild Australian climate with mild winters and no
snow these pests would breed all the year round and reach epidemic
proportions escaped them.
It did n't take long for the foxes to eat much of the rare indigenous
animals such as potaroos and other mammals until they became endangered
species.
There has been a concerted effort in my state to wipe out the foxes or at
least reduce their numbers considerably. The result has been that some of
the rare native animals are recovering in numbers as the numbers of foxes
decline. 10/80 poison is an important part of this campaign, a poison to
which the native animals have developed immunity but the introduced
species have not.
There have also been fox drives with farmers with guns going out in force
with 1000s of dead foxes to show for their drives.
My wife kept fowls in our back garden which was on the border of some bush
land. One night foxes got in and killed all the fowls, just senseless
slaughter, dead fowls everywhere, some with heads missing. They are savage
killers who kill for the joy of it, not only for food.
Rabbits used to eat the farmers out of house and home but myxie and the
calesi virus almost wiped that pest out. There are still some to be seen
around the countryside but there are not the numbers that there used to
be.
There are other pests which do not gain as much attention, the cane toad
was one but there is now an effort being made to control this pest, golden
carp were introduced into some of our rivers with dire results for local
fish.
The moral beind this story is, that you never introduce a foreign species
of animal or plant until you are quite sure that it will never become a
pest. Australian laws reagrding the introduction of any plant or animals
material are strict and as a result some exotic diseases such as rabies
have been kept out of the country.
