Hello Dave,
Thanks for your nice 'welcome back'!
I am happy to read that I am not the only one to pick up the 'old' hobby,
in fact I feel a bit proud that I am now one of 'the old guys' ehrm
'senior radio amateurs' ;-)
I assume your company is now in a state where it can be left alone during
after office hours? Congratulations to that. I know how hard one has to
work to start a business. My wife and I still are in the process.
It's good to read that you have been able to repair some of your radio
equipment and are able to use it again.
I found 'only' my rig (Yaesu FT-726R) did not survive the lazy 7 years.
It appears to work fine, when powerd up in 'cold' condition, but when it
gets warm it shows all kind of strange behaviour.
The internal SWR meter thinks it has to compete with the internal POWER
meter and the internal POWER meter thinks it has to show the internal
rig-temperature, external instruments however show no problem with the SWR
or POWER at all.
After approx. 15 mins it refuses to transmit on 145.700 but it does on
145.699.9 and 145.700.1
It also refuses to transmit on 433.100 but it does on 433.099.9 and
433.100.1
All errors that I have found occure on both the 70cm and 2mtr modules, so
I think it is wise to start examining the frontend of this rig and then
work my way deeper into it.
My first impression is that maybe (and hopefully) the 'liquid capacitors'
have dried out during the years, causing the strange behaviour.
Well to be honest, after so many years of doing nothing, I would dry out
as well and start behaving strange too :-)
But because I very much liked to own a rig that also is capable of
transmitting on all the bands, including HF, I decided to buy this
FT-897D.
I must say that I am VERY happy with it, although it would have been nice
if some more buttons where on it.
Most of this rig is menu-driven, which makes it not very easy to operate
when switching between bands and modes.
But what am I complaing about; I have a luxilliary problem ;-)
Currently my old 726R is used as a receiver and does this job without any
complaining. This causes that I don't feel the pressure of repairing it,
maybe next winter...
Ok that's it (for now).
I am happy to log my FIRST QSO with a US HAM!
For many weeks I am trying to find the right weather conditions to contact
some HAMs directly in phone or digital mode, but still did not succeed.
But, the sunny months are coming to us, which means we go outside! (and
improve the antenna situation, but don't tell my wife yet)
73es,
Bert de PE1KZU
