I am a bit confused about CD and DVD formats. both on stand alone players
and PC.
Three month ago, I recorded everything had on Audio tape, vinyl,CD etc
onto one CD using Windows Movie maker set to sound only and using a mini
jack lead on MIC IN.
I found that, just recording all my favourites, about 10 CDs worth, only
took up 1/3 rd of a CD if I used Roxio to format the CD as music then copy
all my .WMA files to it.
The disk played quite happily on my cheap CD Ghetto Blaster.
I recorded a CD of 50s and 60s music for a friend of mine and posted it
through their letter box when I was passing.
Yesterday, I called in on them. They used a DVD player to play CDs as they
normally do but, unlike my cheap ghetto blaster, the DVD player refused to
play the CD saying "NO DISK."
In the meantime, I had bought the cheapest DVD recorder and had recorded
two things to CD+R and one to CD+R/W. They both played without any
problems on their DVD player.
Soeone had sold me the last of his stock of DVD-R disks for UKP 1.00 not
expensive so I thought they might be useable. My DVD recorder and My PC
both don't recognise them. "INSERT disk in drive E:" is the warning from
the PC DVD drive. The same thing it says if I try to play a DVD I have
recorded, on my DVD recorder,in it. Yet it will play a commercial disk.
The big question is why?
Is my DVD ROM on the PC not able to play anything I have recorded but will
play commercial DVDs?
What is the difference between DVD-R,R/W and DVD+R, R/W ?
Why are portable CD players advertised as being able to pla 'WMA format
when my cheap player will do it anyway?
As I wait for everything to become cheaper before I buy one, I know that
many people out there will have had DVD player and DVD recorders, since
they were over UKP 1000.00 each. People will have DVD 'burners' for their
PC, currently around UKP 50.
I expect a lot of people wil have minidisk players, MPEG plalers, IPODs
and
cheaper versions of the IPOD so, this matter of mixed formats will be
ancient history to them. I would still like to know.
All the best & thanks in advance.
