The third full weekend in August is fast approaching, when stations are
set up in some 450 lighthouse, lightship and marine beacon locations
to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and the need
for their preservation and restoration, and at the same time to promote
amateur radio and foster International goodwill.

My local club, the Manly Warringah Radio Society, will be setting up
the VK2MB station at Barrenjoey Lighthouse (AU0046) which overlooks
Palm Beach in the northern part of Sydney.

Who else intends to set up a station and join the fun? What bands and
modes do you plan to work?

It should be a busy weekend in VK, not only because of the traditionally
high level of VK stations participating in the ILLW, but because it also
coincides with the VK/ZL/P2 Rememberance Day Contest which commemorates
the Amateurs who died during the second World War.

The ILLW event starts on Sat 16 Aug at 0100z and finishes Sun 17 Aug at
2359z. Whether or not you are operating from a lighthouse, listen out for
lighthouse stations and make some contacts to help us celebrate these
magnificent structures that served such an important purpose in maritime
history.
