We could compare your old slow as badworking as bpq tnc based nodes and, the
rmnc/flexnet node or x-net for tnc3 then!
But the conclusing will be the same as comparing bpq and pc/flexnet.

The tnc2, clones, kantronics tnc or similair tnc isn't at all suitlabe for any
node any more. It is to slow to handle a good node with adaptive parameters
working routing etc.
You can't ever use a tnc2 for running a node as good as a pc baced node like
pc flexnet.

There is a node hardware called rmnc, it is built up by modules, it is very
good and cheap both for low and high speed packet. The software for it is
flexnet, it is a rmnc/flexnet node.
Most flexnet nodes are not pc/flexnet nodes, they are rmnc/flexnet nodes at
least that was so a while a go, but for higher speeds and also other wise is
the rmnc/flexnet node to prefer. From the beginning was there only the
rmnc/flexnet node.
The power consumption is low, it is very reliable and it is very suitlable
for a unatended node. You can put it on a mountin top, use solar
power and so on.
You can also run a x-net node in tnc3 if you like.

But forget the old obsolte tnc2 nodes, like thenet x1j, the kantroincs node
etc!

>In the US, Kantronics Data Engine TNC's outfitted with BPQ code in ROM
>can often be found doing main-line network service.
It is support for the bpq multi dropp kiss, called xkiss by kantronics.
But the creation of that code was done by the kantronics people them selves.
But the xkiss is not very impressing, it doen't solve the problems of kiss.
So it is only for hostmode use the kantronics tncs are any good.

>If the Flexnet people
>were serious about promoting their system, seems they would release code
>that would work with the Data Engine TNC's.
No it is a matter of kantronics!
It is nt like with the tnc2 that is some sort of defacto standard for which
many people developes software.
There are no third party software for kantroincs, you are in the hands of
Kantronics. It should not be any problem if they jsut wanted to support their
users with good firwares, but the ham radio part of their market is mbay be
not so imortant so that they care. It will cost kantroincs some money to make
a 6pack supporting firmware!
It is not only flexnet that is using 6pack for tnc communication, many other
nodes, packet drivers etc also does that. So 6pack will be more and more
important.

The flexnet people are probably more interested in their new rmnc hardware for
even higher speeds, flexnet for linux and other interesting stuff they work on.
It is a hobby for them, they don't make any money on it, so they don't
need to promote anything!
They have their highspeed flexnet network that is more important for them,
than making free software for kantronics tncs.

To make the stock holders of kantronics a favour isn't what they give the
highest priority I guess!
