Hello!
>I use BPQ and I like it. Anders, it works!
That isn't realy true!
The routing of bpq, the way of measure quallity doesn't work as it is supposed
to. May times is fames routed through a slower links because the quallity is
of no interest it is the rtt you care about.
Also the network information is update to seldom, why the routes decission is
based on old worthless information.
This is fixes in flexnet and also in new net/rom nodes like thenetnode and
xnet.

The packet driver works.
But since it doesn't work as good as flexnet is there a reson to change any
way. A pcketdriver like flexnet can do much more tha bpq, with its adaptive
parameter does it increase the link capabillyties rather much.
It is also more transparent to the users etc.

>BPQ does the job. It has no problems to saturate a 1200 bps packet link
>what so ever. So why change? It's there, installed on my computer. It's
>configured and ready to run. It runs right now! So what can I gain by
>switching to Flexnet ????
Much!

> Do I get more speed?
Yes you do!

>I've already got 1200 bps and that's the best my TNC (KPC-4) can do.
Bpq isn't a good packet driver.

Is that the best your tnc can do is it completly worth less!
You use your tnc in kiss mode, now it works just like a modem nothing else,
not a tnc.
Why did you by a tnc? A uscc card would have worked better, sice kiss isn't
very good.

To use your tnc use host mode.
Or a tnc based node, but now a days is a tnc like tnc3 required to handle
that. Other tncs are to slow.

>Please tell me what there is to gain by switching from BPQ to Flexnet.
I will!

>IMHO there is:
>
>1. Way more work to be done; install, config, searching for help...
> BPQ requires NO WORK AT ALL because it's installed and works!
To install the packet driver doesnt realy requre any thing it is very simple.
Just load the drivers is a batch file, thanks to the adaptive parameters are
nosetting needed.
Just mycall and txd.

The node isn't complicated either.
Just set mycall, mode(baud rate), txd and portcalls and it works.
Then set up links to bbs etc.
There are other setting also thet can be made but if these are done will the
node work.

>2. No more speed because the link is already saturated at 1200 bps.
You get more speed thanks to the adaptive parameters and the packet collector.
The packet collector collects frames even if frames in the beginning of the
sequence is missing. Then when tay come is the whole sequence taken care of.
To gether with flexnets adaptive parameters that dropes maxframes to one when
rej frame is revcived, does thi make that no uneccesary frames are resent.
This realy increases the speed.

And I doubt that you have set up tha parameters of bpq in the right way, there
are very few who have tested out what parameters work best.

Many bpq setups are with bpq an a bbs on acomputer that is to slow, that makes
bpq slow and bpqs response slow.
Thanks to that can't the real max speed be achived.

ALso the net/rom portocoll add allot overhead data which flexnet doesn't.
Flexnet uses header compression.
Flexnet doesn't use the protocoll when connection your neighbour.
Also the link speed is the speed of the slowest link not like in bpq.
And that the routing works increases the speed.

>What more do I want?
You may be want a good packet network!
The users of your links would appriciate it.

>Nothing at all! Look, I need a node - period! I've got a node. Does it work?
>YES. Fine!
Unfortuanaly you have the most out dated and least god node avaliable.
You have made a misstake correct it!

>So what's the big deal with Flexnet?
That flexnet works better.
The packet driver is better and so is the node part, its routing and protocoll.
Flexnet support for hardware, almost every hard ware except kantronics tncs
can be used.

> > If the nodes which is using bpq would change to flexnet would the

>
>Ok, ok... When all our old nodes run Flexnet I'll consider it...
The conservatism and lack of knowledge of the packet users will kill packet
radio!

> > Both the node and a packet driver are real easy to set up and it

> > have.
>
>I bet it's not easier to setup than a system already set up, huh?
It is. To get the parameters of bpq right is more complicated than to set up
flexnet.
So you are wrong.

>The easy installation argument is not good enough when it comes to changing
>an old (working) system. I don't change my car because a brand new one is
>easier to assemble.
I didnt thought you had a car. Why did you get one, you can walk!

If you can get a car that costs nothing, can achived much higher speeds, is
much easier to drive, uses less fuel and is much safer, then would you
probably not change car any way.

And flexnet have been around since 91 or soemthing like that.
>I'll never ever assemble a car, I work with computers, I
>don't know anything about cars. I don't need an easy installation.
You don't now very much about packet radio either I see.

If work with computers and don't need any easy installation, why is it then a
problem for you to set up a node that is very easy to set up?

> My node
>is already installed, why should I consider a new one that is easier to
>install when I've already got an installed node?
May be you know now!

Thge only real problem is tha you have a kantronics tnc, that can't be used
with flexnet until kantronics have created a 6pack firmware.
But xnet and thenetnode can be used, and they are better than bpq.
