Yesterday I installed BPQ underneath Windows 95 and I now use it with
Winpack. This I did to get rid of the persistent OVERRUN ERRORs on the
serial line from my Tulip laptop in HOSTMODE.

Of all the files included I only load BPQCODE in AUTOEXEC.BAT and have
copied BPQDLL.DLL (the updated version from WinPack) and BPQCODE.386
into Windows\system. Of course I edited BPQCFG.TXT and then ran
BPQCFG.exe to convert the setting file to binary.

I disabled the COM1 port in Windows. There were two ways to disable the
port of which one was terribly wrong - it somehow caused the port to be
disabled in the BIOS, too. This was impossible to know from the help
texts in Windows and the description next to the tick boxes (in Finnish)
was of no help either. As a side-effect the previous COM2 (IR port!) now
became COM1 allof the sudden.

Anyway I got it all set up despite of Windows 95 and Plug and Pray. I
survived and it looks like BPQ is working OK.

First I tested with PAC4 and that worked, BUT I couldn't find a decent
way - a command - to exit the program. Would anybody know how to exit
PAC4?

PAC4 didn't handle 8-bit characters, which is a typical Anglosaxon
'oversight', but it isn't a problem anymore as I got Winpack running
again.

One rather tricky problem is that the TNC will revert to terminal mode
(it's got TF2.7b) when the power supply is cycled. Because Windows knows
nothing about the COM1 port, it is impossible to use a Windows terminal
emulator to send the command to enter KISS-mode (<esc>@K). First I need
to re-enable the COM1-port, then use a terminal emulator and init
KISS-mode on the TNC. Then I have to disable COM1 again. Fortunately I
run the TNC and other stuff from a supply which is buffered by a
battery, so a power outage should not reset the TNC.

Is there not a simpler way to start KISS-mode? Would it be better to get
TNC2 firmware for KISS-mode only? Would 6PACK work with BPQ and is it
available in an EPROM?

I did try to study the 6pack and Flexnet stuff on the Inet, but it was
all too bl...y complicated.

I know of one packet terminal program that has a KISS-init string in its
settings file, but couldn't find any such setting in BPQCFG.

What do BPQ-experts think? Have I done everything about right or did I
miss something? The instructions for BPQ are ... well .... in a 1000
files it seems. I did my best on BPQCFG.TXT, but in some places that
stuff looks rather challenging.

It does look like I got around the OVERRUN problem and packet still
works, so despite poor understanding it's really a success.
