I well remember the fun that I had with MY Honda 90cc many years ago.
It was great in the summer, terrible in the winter, though one could go
reasonably dressed if it was not too far due to the fairings protecting
one's legs more than a conventional M\bike.
Winter time it acted like a pig, and early one COLD morning, it
absolutely refused to start. Having ridden it much to work and back in the
dark mornings and dark nights, the battery had had quite a discharge, so
was pretty flat with not much daylight to charge it back up again. Hence
the refusal to start. Instead of the kick-start giving the usual nice
brrmmm, all systems go and it firing up, it was more of a chug chug, dull
yellow light and dead stop.
Always one for testing, experimenting, and trying to find out if things
would do what they were not supposed to do, I decided on a last-ditch
effort to start it. I had NO time whatsoever to charge it up before going,
as I had no charger available. However, I was fortunate enough to have
just bought a cheap car, but had not taxed it as yet.
Right, mind made up. Straight to the car, unhooked the 12 volt car
battery and with a couple of long leads, put it straight across the 6 volt
Honda battery for about 2 minutes or so. Such a quick "fast charge" is of
course, NOT in the book, and not recommended for those not of a stout
heart, but any port in a storm. It did the usual brmm, and fired up
straight away, the light shone brilliantly and the ride to work failed to
flatten it for coming home 9 hrs later.
I did another 2 minute fast charge the next day, and that lasted until
the battery was charged with daylight running a few days later. I never
had that problem again and the bike ran perfectly for several months until
I sold it when the first harmonic came along and we needed to convert the
Honda into a more equitable family possesion, money.
If you need to change the electrical system, then you will have to
change absolutely EVRYTHING which is 6 volt! Quite a big job and not one
that I would particularly like to. If you leave ONE thing out, then it
will suffer over-voltage and blow. Bulbs, dynamo\alternator ignition etc,
all need to be checked for conversion to 12v.
If you are having problems with a manual KICK start, then you will have
the same, if not worse, problem, with an electonic ignition I suspect. You
will have to sort that out B4 you put one in, I would think. Might pay to
swap it for a 12volt bike! Best of luck.
