I'm sure that a lot of Brits who remember "Pub With no Beer" probably
think Slim Dusty was a one hit wonder when the song was in the charts here
back in 1957 (No 1 in Ireland, No 3 in UK) but when he died is Sept 2003
he was working on his 106th album.

On March 2004 the album "Columbia Lane - The Last Sessions" went straight
to No 1 in the country music charts, and No five in the Australian album
charts. Two weeks later, it went gold.

He sold five million records during his career, and was by far the most
prolific recording artist in Oz. He won more gold and platinum discs that
any other Australian singer, and 36 "golden guitars".

Slim had a number of "firsts":

First Australian to have an international hit.

First Australian singer to win a gold disc.

First Australian country music singer to be awarded the MBE.

First singer in the world to have his voice beamed to Earth from space,
in 1983 when astronauts Crippen and Young played Waltzing Matilda from the
Space Shuttle Columbia as it passed over Australia.

In 1998 Slim was made Officer of the Order of Australia. The Order of
Australia is an order of chivalry established by the Queen on Feb 14, 1975
'for the purpose of according recognition to Australian citizens and other
persons for achievement or for meritorious service'. (Before establishment
of the Order, Australian citizens received British honours).

In 2000, Slim was the closing act at the Sydney Olympics on Oct 1 when
he sang Waltzing Matilda.

Quite a guy.

He died in 2003, aged 76.
