Hi, and thanks if you can spend some time on this issue.
Now, when there are increasing popular windows-based emulators to talk to a
TNC, there is a need for establishing a standard on what codepage should be
used.
Today, many os us are using a PC with some kind of DOS based program, like
YAPP, PAKET etc. there are many more. These are all relating on a DOS code-
page. As time goes, more and more Windows based program is gaining popularity,
ie. WinPack, some uses windows own HyperTerminal, but there are more.. These
are using a Windows Codepage.
So, we have two types of codepage, one for DOS and one for Windows, and the
'clever guys' at Microsoft have, for som reason decided that these cannot be
compatible. This means, today, (I am only referring to full 8 bits set),
that a DOS based program talking to a DOS based program, including BBSes and
DXClusters gets national characters as expected. But, when the guy with a
true Windows program talk to other stations using DOS based programs, will have
problem with the national characters. But Windows to Windows works fine.

Of course, this is not a problem in the US, since they have a 'limited'
characterset, A thru Z, but almost every country outside US have some more
characters, which uses the 8th bit set.

So, my proposal is, we all standardize on DOS based codepage in AX25 packet-
world, and Windows based program subsequently need a user tailorable
translation table to map national Dos <-> Windows characters.

What is your opinion?

I would be very glad for all feedback on this issue.
