Hi Folks
For those who do not know me yes I do work for Dick Smith Electronics and
have done so now for nearly 11 years. DSE as most would be aware is now
owned by Woolworths (Aust).
I do not know quite when the first time I met Dick personally but I
imagine it was about 20 years ago in his office at North Ryde I had made
an appointment to see him and was sitting in his reception area reading a
magazine waiting for him to arrive when he walked in informing his
secretary to cancel all appointments for that day. Walking into his office
he said to her that there was a Radio Amateur chap coming down from
Brisbane to see him and he would see him but warn him that he could only
give him 5 minutes. I eventually got into his office expecting to leave
soon after but it was two hours later before I finally left.
The next time I met Dick was with my father I flew down to Sydney met my
dad at the airport and boarded a Jumbo for a 12 hours trip with Dick over
Antartica with out going into details this had to be one of the highlights
of both of our lives. Seats on the Jumbo were all one class and I beleive
seated first come first served but by strange coincidence it appeared
those few known Amateurs on board ended all up sitting in the first class
seats.
Whilst he would not know me now from a bar of soap I have though met Dick
a couple of times since always the same a with a welcome hand shake and
great smile for all those around.
There are some public things that Dick has quite generously assisted in
but I am well aware that there are many others not so public where he has
quitely helped others in various ways. I personally beleive Dick to be a
true blue great Aussie and admire him very much.
I have not read many of the "DESERT" bulletins but if there are some who
are being critical of him it is only due to thier ignorance of the man
that they are doing so.
