BPL gains funds and support

In the United States, Broadband over Powerlines has now been linked with
corporate names like the Google web searcher and information technology
company IBM.
At the same time the American Radio Relay League has formally asked the
Federal Communications Commission to re-think its BPL rules.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Current Communications Group has
received $100 million from Google and others to fund a start-up of BPL.
In another development, the New York Times reported that IBM is expected to
announce a partnership with Houston Texas-based CenterPoint Energy to
develop BPL.
The companies are said to be about to test and demonstrate the technology
for consumers and other utility providers.
Meantime the Amateur Radio Relay League has petitioned the FCC for it to
'reconsider, rescind and re-study' the Broadband over Power Line rules
adopted last October.
The ARRL in its latest move refers to the FCC’s own recent words in
relation to another spectrum technology called Ultra-wideband.
The ARRL refers to the FCC’s Report and Order into Ultra-wideband which
states that a reasonable reading of the Communications Act would limited
licensing to 'any apparatus which transmits enough energy to have a
significant potential for causing harmful interference'.
In addition, the ARRL also cited results from studies by the United Kingdom
regulator, Ofcom, to show that BPL signal leakage is way above the FCC’s
rules.
The ARRL asks the FCC to establish radiated emission limits for BPL that
are a level that would make the chances of interference negligible.
